Step 1 Choose your program

Step 2 Review admission requirements and deadlines
The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research sets a minimum academic standard for admission for both Canadian and international applicants. However, you should be aware of our specific admission requirements.

NOTE: PhD applicants - Before submitting your application, you must identify a supervisor from among School of Public Health faculty members who agrees to supervise your thesis research. For information about how to get started in this process, visit Selecting Your Supervisor.
Step 3 Apply online
Complete the online application for admission on the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research website.
NOTE: If you are applying to the MPH or MSc degree, or postgraduate diploma, program in health promotion, please select the department (Health Promotion Studies). Then, in the specialization drop-down menu, choose Distance Learning or U of A Campus. (Refer to image below.)

For all other degrees and specializations, including the PhD program in health promotion and socio-behavioural sciences, please select the department – Public Health Sciences – and choose the specialization from the list.
VISA or MasterCard: A non-refundable $100 CAD application fee must be paid with a valid Visa or Mastercard. You will be asked to enter this information at the end of the application.
Third-Party Payment: You may complete your application and place it on hold for a third party to pay the application fee by Visa or Mastercard on your behalf; instructions are within the application. Payment must be received before your application expires AND before the department application deadline. Applications are not considered submitted until payment is received.
Application Fee Waivers: The application fee automatically will be waived if you are applying from one of the countries waived from the application fee.
Applying online will result in faster processing of your application. You will receive confirmation of your application as well as important University information via e-mail, so ensure you use a personal address that you check frequently.
Step 4 Send your documents
All supporting documents, including official transcripts, exam scores, must be sent directly to the School of Public Health. Please refer to the directions below.
You must mail the following documents to our office:
- Original official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions that you have attended.

The following items may be either mailed or emailed to our office:
- Your Curriculum Vitae or resume is where you may identify any relevant employment experience, other languages spoken, academic honours received, and publications and presentations.
- A one- to two-page letter of intent:
Course-based applicants: The letter of intent, which is not more than 800 words, should include a synthesis of your background (scholastic / academic training and work / research experience) and career goals, why you want to enter your program of interest, highlights of special skills and abilities, areas of study in which you are interested and why you are interested in them.
Thesis-based applicants: The letter of intent, which is not more than 800 words, should include a synthesis of your background (scholastic / academic training and work / research experience) and career goals, as well as outline the anticipated research topic(s) or areas of thesis research.
- Three letters of reference that provide an appraisal of your skills and abilities that are relevant to public health practice, not just your academic ability. At least one reference should be from a university professor or instructor.
Referees will be asked to complete and provide a general appraisal of your strengths and weaknesses, how long they have known you and in what capacity, your ability in the English language, and your specific abilities.
Provide each of your referees with the Referee Form for completion along with their letter of recommendation.
Referees must forward the letter by email directly to the Education Office.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the English language as described in our Admission Requirements.
