Duncan Saunders

As a generalist epidemiologist, my scholarly interests over the course of my career have involved several topical areas and methodological approaches. Topical areas have included hypertension management, AIDS-related malignancies, pre-eclampsia, spinal cord injuries, hip fractures and anti-retroviral treatment for AIDS.

I have employed various methodological approaches to conduct descriptive epidemiological studies (trends and studies of prognosis), causative epidemiological studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and health services utilization and outcomes studies using large administrative databases. I have conducted workshops on evidence-informed health care and research methods in Indonesia, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda.

Since 2002 my research has had a global health focus. In particular, I have been part of a team of researchers involved in a series of studies around HIV/AIDS in Western Uganda. These studies have been conducted in collaboration with Ugandan colleagues from the Makerere University, Kampala and the Kabarole Health District.

I serve on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Society for International Health and on the Editorial Board of the Canadian Journal of Public Health.
